Feline acne is a dermatological problem
that affects a cat's
chin. On the chin, the cat has several glands
which secrete sebum. In certain cats however, there is an increase in
sebum secretion so blackheads and comedones will appear. If the condition
worsens, an infection can also develop in the shape of small pimples
that ooze and cause inflammation and redness. The cat will then be inconvenienced
by his acne and scratch himself.
What is the cause?
An excessive sebum formation on the chin is a predisposing factor.
It is also believed that certain cats can suffer from allergies, for
example to their plastic bowls, to something in their environment
or even to their food.
What can I do to treat my cat?
First, it will be necessary to regularly clean the chin of your cat
with a degreasing shampoo prescribed by the veterinarian. It may be
necessary to shave the chin of the cat. An antibiotic cream could
be used. If the veterinarian suspects an allergy, he or she will recommend
that you switch to ceramics or metal bowls instead of plastic bowls,
for starters. If Kitty's diet seems to be in question, an hypoallergenic
diet needs to be given to the animal for several weeks in order to
see if the condition improves. It should also be mentioned that feline
acne is seldom cured completely. Recurring episodes are frequent,
but with appropriate care, this condition can be controlled to make
Kitty more comfortable and happier!
